It's Never Too Late for God to Work
Today's Verse
1When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless,2that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly.”3Then Abram fell on his face. And God said to him,4“Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations.5No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.Genesis 17 · ESV
The Devotion
Did you know the oldest person in the world is 117 years old? Mrs. Ethel Caterham was born on August 21, 1909. In her lifetime, the Titanic sank, World War I was fought, the Great Depression was survived, World War II was fought... and that's all that happened in less than half of her life. Truly unbelievable!
In Genesis 17, God speaks to Abram. He's not quite as old as Ethel at this point, but he's 99 years old. I imagine he had thought about God's promises given to him before over many years. Then God shows up and asks Abram to walk with him. Abram fell on his face, and God reiterated his covenant to give Abram a son and bless him through a multitude of nations.
If you read all about Abraham from Genesis 11 to Genesis 25, you realize that he was far from perfect. But in James 2:23, Abraham is called "God's friend." That's not said about anybody else in the Bible. Galatians 3:7 tells us that all believers in Jesus are children of Abraham. God has already given us an amazing blessing through the seed of Abraham, His own Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus can change anybody, whether you're 9, 99, or 117. That's good news!
Lord, thank you that all of your promises will come to pass. Thank you that Jesus is the fulfillment and proof that you are who you say you are and you do what you say you can do. Help me lean on you, worship before you, and walk with you like Abraham today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
