“Fix these words of mine in your hearts . . . tie them as symbols on your hands” Deuteronomy 11:18

From Seven Demons to Walking with God

Today's Verse

1After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him,2and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out;3Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.4While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable:5“A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up.6Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture.7Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants.8Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.” When he said this, he called out, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”9His disciples asked him what this parable meant.10He said, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, “‘though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’11“This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.12Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.13Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.14The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.15But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

The Devotion

In Luke 8, we encounter more people who started walking with God. These disciples, men and women, got the opportunity to literally, physically walk with God in the flesh, Jesus Christ. One of them was named Mary Magdalene. We know that she came from Magdala, which was a town in the southwest corner of Galilee. We know that Jesus healed her by casting out seven demons, and we know that she was one of the first witnesses to Jesus' resurrection. She became a bold witness for God.

Others have speculated about Mary Magdalene's past. We don't know a whole lot, but we know that she had a dramatic turn from darkness to light when the demons were cast away.

Demons are fallen angels who disobey God. They don't have the same power as God, but they can afflict, torment, and even possess people who do not have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them. That's what the Bible teaches.

Jesus set Mary Magdalene free, so she followed him. She proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God. As Jesus shared in verse 11, the seed is the word of God. Some will hear and receive it. Sometimes the seed will fall on stony ground. Sometimes people will receive the seed for a season and then fall away. Our job, like Mary Magdalene, is to follow and stay faithful. God's job is to bring the harvest. Don't get weary in following today. Be faithful and trust God to bring the harvest as you share Jesus.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, thank you so much for the work of grace you're doing in my life. Help me proclaim the good news to others, just like Mary Magdalene and the other disciples. My past can be forgiven and even become a testimony as I share what you can do in anyone's life. I love you, Lord, and follow you today in Jesus' name. Amen.
