The First Camo
Today's Verse
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made.He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”Genesis 3 · BSB
The Devotion
At our church in South Arkansas, we just finished up an annual tradition: Camo Sunday. It's just a fun way to celebrate the onset of deer season, which is right up there with Christmas and Easter around here.
There are dozens of different types of camo that people can wear to hunt or just show off the latest fashion. The U.S. military officially has four active kinds or patterns of camo, but there are some that have been retired, like desert camouflage, frog skin, and tiger stripe military camo. Kind of cool to think about!
Obviously, the main use of camo in the wild is to conceal or cover. If we use that definition of camo, Adam and Eve were the first ones to conceal themselves, but they didn't do a very good job of it. After they sinned and disobeyed God's one rule of not eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, after living with Him in paradise with no pain, sorrow, or death, and after they believed the lie that God didn't want what was best for them, the Bible says they sewed fig leaves together and hid from God.
The only problem is you can't hide from God. That's why He's God. He knows everything and sees everything, and nobody can hide from His presence, but because of His holiness, Adam and Eve realized that their sinfulness separated them from Him. The fig leaves were a pitiful type of camo. God ended up providing the first blood sacrifice to cover them. I believe that's a foreshadowing of the Lamb of God, Jesus, who covers our sin and shame so that we can walk in the freedom. We don't have to hide from God when our life is hidden with Christ in Him.
Lord, thank you for covering me with the blood of Jesus. Thank you that you know every part of me, and because of what Jesus has done for me, my life is hidden with you and God. Nobody can snatch me out of your hand. Help me walk in the light as you're in the light today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
