The Habit of Holiness
Today's Verse
5The Lord saw that the wickedness (depravity) of man was great on the earth, and that every imagination or intent of the thoughts of his heart were only evil continually.6The Lord regretted that He had made mankind on the earth, and He was [deeply] grieved in His heart.7So the Lord said, “I will destroy (annihilate) mankind whom I have created from the surface of the earth—not only man, but the animals and the crawling things and the birds of the air—because it [deeply] grieves Me [to see mankind’s sin] and I regret that I have made them.”8But Noah found favor and grace in the eyes of the Lord.9These are the records of the generations (family history) of Noah. Noah was a righteous man [one who was just and had right standing with God], blameless in his [evil] generation; Noah walked (lived) [in habitual fellowship] with God. 10 Now Noah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.Genesis 6:5-9 · AMP
The Devotion
Turn on the news, scroll through TikTok, look at your YouTube feed... it seems like the wickedness of the world is getting worse by the day. The Bible talks about a time that looked pretty similar. It was so bad that every thought and intention that men had was "only evil continually." It was so bad that the Lord regretted making man. It was so bad that God was grieved. It broke his heart.
Because God is holy, he can't tolerate wickedness. But the Bible says that there is one man who found grace in the eyes of God. His name was Noah. In Hebrew, his name is very similar in sound to the word for "relief" or "rest." Noah obeyed God and his commandments the best he knew how, even in the middle of a wicked generation. He went against the flow of what everybody else was doing. Remember, only dead things go with the flow. Noah was alive, and the Bible says that he walked and lived in habitual fellowship with God.
The way to walking with the Holy God is holiness. The way to holiness is habits. Specifically, a habit of yielding to Jesus and allowing Him to abide and live in us. To walk with us, to shape our thoughts, attitudes, intentions, and affections so that they are not wicked, but instead pleasing to God. God's power and presence through Jesus is the only way we can be holy as God commands us to do, because Jesus obeyed in our place. He is the great Ark of safety. Anyone can come into Him and find safety, security, rest, and protection from sin and judgment.
Lord, like Noah, help me walk with you today. Help me have a habit of being in fellowship and friendship with you. Thank you that you, the Holy and Almighty and righteous God, made a way for me to be in relationship with you through Jesus Christ. Help me lean on him in all things today, acknowledging you, and you will direct my paths. In Jesus' name, amen.
