The Devotion
In the Bible, Enoch is somewhat of a mystery man. He's only mentioned in the passages that we just read. We know from the genealogy in Genesis and the family tree that Enoch was the great-great-great-great-grandson of Adam. Enoch is the very first person in the Bible specifically mentioned as a person who walked with God.
Here's one mystery about Enoch. Why was he taken away into heaven? Some people believe he is one of the two witnesses that are mentioned in Revelation. They speculate that Enoch and Elijah (the only other person who was taken into heaven without tasting death) will be the two that are prophesied as preaching the gospel and being martyred for the faith.
Maybe, like Robert Stack in the creepy trench coat, we'll get a chance to solve an unsolved mystery one day. Until then, what the Bible says is sufficient. What we do know about Enoch is that he walked faithfully with God. In the Bible, your name really meant something. Enoch's name means "dedicated" or "trained up." In other words, he allowed God to train him in godliness and trust throughout the course of his life. No one's perfect. I'm sure there are times when Enoch struggled in his faith, but his life was a walk with God, a communion and fellowship with his Creator, in the direction of faithfulness and obedience.
If someone zoomed out at the picture of your life and had to sum up your whole life, would they be able to say, like Enoch, that you pleased God and walked with God throughout your life? We can't change our yesterdays, but God can forgive us for our past and set us on his path of righteousness as we walk day by day, step by step, moment by moment with him. Are you willing to do that today?
Lord, help me be like Enoch and walk with you faithfully, daily, and openly, so much so that other people see your faithfulness to me and my obedience to you because you love me first. Jesus, help me walk with you and love and live like you today. Help me in my thoughts, attitudes, emotions, conversations, and the way I spend my time to reflect you and my closeness with you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
