The Light of Life
Today's Verse
1That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life—2the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us—3that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.4And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.5This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.6If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.8If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.10If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.1 John 1:1-10 · ESV
The Devotion
Let's look at some passages from 1 John over the next few days. I love 1 John because of how simple it is. It was written by John, the beloved disciple, the one who followed Jesus to the very end. Right up front, he wants everyone to know that he knows what he's talking about. He says "we have seen Jesus with out eyes" and "we've looked on Him and touched Him with our hands." John wasn't inventing some random new religion or passing along some nice thoughts. He had actually touched the light of the world, and he was never the same.
John walked with the light of the world for three years. Now John tells believers to walk in the light of Jesus. Walking in the light leads to fellowship with other believers. I've noticed a pattern over and over: when people fall into sin and start going their own way instead of the Jesus way, they quickly lose their habit of going to church, spending time with other believers, and opening up for accountability.
On the other hand, there are even some Christians who say they have no sin at all. Verse 8 says that those people have lied to themselves, and the truth is not in them. Yes, we are being made more and more like Jesus, and through the Holy Spirit's power, we can sin less and flee from sin, but we all have moments when we still disobey God, even after receiving salvation. The beautiful promise is that, although we sin as believers, we have a faithful and just God who always forgives us and cleanses us when we confess our sin.
Thank God that He is faithful and just to always cleanse us, forgive us, and get us back on track. Who do you know that needs to know this message today?
Lord, thank you that I'm not following a set of rules or religion that was made up by man. Thank you that I'm following the God-Man, the Word who became flesh, the one who was made manifest as the light of the world to men. Help me walk into the light and find other people to walk alongside me. Help me be quick to confess my sin as the Holy Spirit convicts, and help me live for you today. Thank you for your amazing love and grace, and thank you for cleansing me from all my unrighteousness.
