The Devotion
Confession time. I have a weird hobby. I collect Gospel tracts and Christian postcards from the 1950s and 1960s. As a pastor, they make some of the best sermon illustrations! One of my favorite ones is below (I updated the wording for 2026). It definitely makes you think about not forgetting about God throughout the day!
BEGIN THE DAY WITH GOD;
Kneel down to Him in prayer;
Lift up thy heart to His abode.
And seek His love to share.
OPEN THE BOOK OF GOD,
And read a portion there;
That it may purify all thy thoughts,
And sweeten all thy care.
GO THROUGH THE DAY WITH GOD,
Whatever you work may be;
Whenever you are at home or far,
He still is near to thee.
CONVERSE IN MIND WITH GOD,
Thy spirit heavenward raise:
Acknowledge every good bestowed,
And offer grateful praise.
CONCLUDE THE DAY WITH GOD,
Your sins to Him confess;
Trust in the Lord's atoning blood,
And plead His righteousness.
LIE DOWN AT NIGHT WITH GOD,
Who gives His servants sleep;
And when you cross the valley of death,
He will thee guard and keep.
Lord, help me be mindful of Your presence, love, power, and care throughout every moment today. I love you and Your love is truly greater than life. Help me seek you first, put you first, and, when the day is done, rest well in Your sovereign hands. In Jesus' name. Amen.
