When Your Bucket List Gets Turned Upside Down
Today's Verse
Before the Passover celebration, Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father. He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very end. It was time for supper, and the devil had already prompted Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.John 13:1-5 · NLT
The Devotion
What would you do if you knew you had only one more day to live? There once was a great theologian named Tim McGraw who told us exactly what he’d do: skydiving, Rocky Mountain climbing, and going 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fumanchu!
If I knew it was my last day, I suppose I would go get 7Brew, spend time with my wife and kids, and grill a nice filet mignon. Hey — I’m just keeping it real!
The truth is, none of us knows what day will be our last. But the Bible says that Jesus knew exactly when his last day would be.
Guess what he did?
He washed feet.
In those days, they didn't have plumbing, so people would often pour their sewage into the streets. You can imagine how dirty and nasty feet would get. The Son of God, Jesus, who created all things and formed man and woman from dust, chose to take on flesh and walk in the dirt with us. Not only did He walk, but He also washed.
After setting the example, Jesus taught His disciples the lesson. Verses twelve to fifteen say, "After washing their feet, He put on His robe again and sat down and asked, 'Do you understand what I was doing? You call Me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and you are right, because that's what I am. And since I, Your Lord and Teacher, have washed Your feet, You ought to wash each other's feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you."
Whose feet can you wash today?
Lord, thank you for setting the example for serving people. Whether I think they deserve it or not, help me take up the towel and serve somebody else in Your name today. Thank you for cleaning me up from the filth of sin and cleansing me from all my unrighteousness. I can never thank you enough. Go ahead of me today and be with every interaction. Cover my mind, body, and spirit with Your Holy Spirit and help me think about Your Word. In Jesus' name. Amen.
