“Fix these words of mine in your hearts . . . tie them as symbols on your hands” Deuteronomy 11:18

The Greatest Introduction

Today's Verse

Some Greeks who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration paid a visit to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee. They said, “Sir, we want to meet Jesus.” Philip told Andrew about it, and they went together to ask Jesus. Jesus replied, “Now the time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory. I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives. Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity. Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.
John 12:20-26 · NLT

The Devotion

These few verses introduce a major theme for the rest of the New Testament: salvation was and is not just for the Jewish people, but for everyone else too! If the Greeks from Jerusalem traveled from Greece, they came a long way - the journey is over 600 miles! But salvation was near to them. These Greeks wanted to see Jesus, so Philip and Andrew introduced them.

Jesus told Philip, Andrew, and the Greeks the essence of discipleship: giving your life away to Jesus and following Him, focusing on heavenly things and eternity, and bringing glory to God by serving Jesus every day. Jesus said, "My servants must be where I am." In John 14, Jesus told His disciples that He was going away to prepare a place for them, and that He would come again so that they (and we) can be where He is! Heaven is for real and anyone can receive the gift of eternal life through Jesus!

Side note: from the very beginning of Andrew's following of Jesus to the very end, any time Andrew is mentioned in the Bible, he is found introducing other people to Jesus. Let's be like Andrew and introduce people to Jesus today!

A Prayer for Today

Lord, thank you that salvation isn't just offered to one type of person. Thank you that Jesus died for the whole world. Some will accept the gift and follow through in discipleship. Help me show Your love, share Your message, and serve You by serving other people today. Thank you that my eyes are fixed on eternity as I gladly live for You. Like Andrew, please give me someone to introduce to Jesus today. In Jesus' name. Amen.
