How big is your Jesus?
Today's Verse
The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus walking by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” And when the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.John 1:35-37 · BSB
The Devotion
Over the next 21 days, I invite you to read the Gospel of John with me. One chapter a day. You can do it!
There's a lot to unpack in John 1. The whole chapter is chock-full of truth. Right out of the gate, the Bible tells us that Jesus is God existing from eternity past (v. 1) and that He is distinct from but equal to the Father ("was with God . . . and was God. The same was in the beginning with God"). The whole world was made by Jesus (v. 2), and He alone gives life and light to a world in darkness (v. 4-5). He did this by taking on human flesh (v. 14) and living and walking among us.
Wow! Fully God AND fully man. When Jesus began His earthly ministry, John the Baptist proclaimed that Jesus was the "lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (v. 29). Jesus came not to live, but to die for our sins.
Many people have a small view of Jesus. They may see Him as a man who lived a long time ago and said some good moral teaching, or they may only want Him to get their "get out of hell" card. But John 1 tells us that Jesus didn't give us any options other than "Come and see" (verse 29) and "Follow me" (verse 43). Before you can be a disciple of Jesus (a follower of Him in every area of your life), you must "Come and see" His grace through salvation. Verse 17 tells us that grace and truth came into the world through Jesus. Have you trusted Him? Have you recieved His grace by being born again? If not, begin the journey by repenting of your sin and placing your faith in Jesus. That's where the amazing journey begins!
Lord, thank you for taking on flesh and living a sinless life in my place. Thank you for being the Lamb of God. Today, I want to follow and trust you with my thoughts, attitudes, actions, and words. Help me focus on Your presence and power in my life today, as I humbly surrender to You in discipleship. Help me tell someone else the good news of grace, mercy, and forgiveness in you. In Jesus' name. Amen.
