“Fix these words of mine in your hearts . . . tie them as symbols on your hands” Deuteronomy 11:18

Is the Bible like honey to you?

Today's Verse

How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Psalm 119:103 · NIV

The Devotion

William McPherson moved from Scotland to the U.S. in 1883 in hopes of a better life. He was raised in a Christian home and professed faith in Christ after a friend witnessed to him, but he drifted away spiritually as he moved out West. He ended up being the superintendent of a large stone quarry in Colorado.

One morning, he became impatient and ordered a worker to ignite a stick of dynamite before the maneuver was ready to be performed. As a result, the stick of dynamite exploded almost right in front of him. He lost both eyes and both hands. Parts of his face were severely injured. Even parts of his lips were left without feeling.

In an instant, his world totally changed. He survived, but spent the rest of his life disabled. He moved to Chicago to a home for disabled men. There, he made an amazing statement. He told people that his greatest sorrow wasn't losing his hands or eyes, but that he didn't know the Bible well.

Friends would read the Bible to him. He memorized some verses, but he wanted to read God's Word on his own. He tried Braille, but couldn't feel the raised dots. Then, his tongue touched the characters and began to feel the dots form into syllables, then words, then verses. A teacher helped him learn Moon type, which uses raised curves.

After years of study and hours running his tongue across the type (some accounts tell us that the pages would leave his tongue bleeding after he practiced), he read the Bible through four times using just his tongue.

Bottom line: Can you and I say with the Psalmist, and with William McPherson.... "How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!"?

A Prayer for Today

Lord, help me desire Your Word more than anything else today. It is sweet to my tongue, life to my bones, and strength for my soul. It is a lamp to my feet and lights up the path of my life. By Your Holy Spirit, open up my eyes to truth in Your Word, and help me apply it to my life today. Thank you for Jesus, the One that the whole Bible points to. In His precious name, Amen.
