Is what you're living for worth Jesus dying for?
Today's Verse
However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.Acts 20:24 · NIV
The Devotion
A few weeks ago, my son and I broke into a cemetery in the middle of nowhere as the sun set low over the East Texas pines. (Actually the gate was unlocked, but the rest of the sentence was true).
Alone in our thoughts, we hiked to the back, past many rows of gravestones, and found the tombstone of Leonard Ravenhill. "Lenny" was born in the UK, lived for most of the 20th century, and eventually transplanted to Texas. He preached the Gospel all over the world and called God's people to reject apathy and live out the Bible. His book "Why Revival Tarries" has sold over 1,000,000 copies and is one of the most convicting books on following Jesus I've ever read.
On his tombstone was the simple, yet life changing question that defined his life: "Are the things you are living for worth Jesus dying for?"
Some other of his quotes: "I'd rather have ten people who want God — than 10,000 people who want to play church!"
"The early church was a lifeboat for rescuing the perishing. Today's church is a cruise ship for pampering the prosperous."
"Our God is a consuming fire. He consumes pride, lust, materialism, and other sin. You never have to advertise a fire. Everyone comes running when there's a fire. If your church is on fire for God, you will not have to advertise it. The community will already know it."
Lord, consume my life with Your Holy fire today. Take away anything and everything that doesn't look like You, because You alone are life and peace and satisfaction. Forgive me for when I've settled for lesser things thank simply knowing Your love, obeying Your Word, and allowing You to guide my life. Help my life be worthy of You because I live for telling all people about Your love through dying for our sins. Help me do that through the power - the same power - that raised Jesus Christ from the dead. In Jesus' name. Amen.
