When God Used a Rodeo Rope

Today's Verse

Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.

The Devotion

This week, I read the story of a freak accident on the Yellowstone River. On July 5, 2026, four people fell off their raft into the river after the raft struck a bridge pillar. Three of the four made it to shore, but one man was still missing.

Fourteen-year-old Jory Thomas heard cries for help as the fast river current moved the man further and further away. Jory emptied his pockets and sprinted across the riverbank to catch up with the man. In his hands, he carried a twelve foot lariat - a rodeo rope that he had been learning how to use for just the last year.

Jory said “First instinct I thought was try and rope him and drag him out before he gets too far down the river . . . Luckily, I caught him first try.” He slowly pulled the survivor to the shore and emergency crews came to help. "I think I just saved a life" he said.

"God was basically putting me in the place of all this" Jory said. "I just thought I could help with cattle," he said. "Not really helping humans and stuff like that. But I'm glad I was here to help."

We may not rescue people from a river with a rodeo rope, but God can use our "little things" in a big way. He used David's little stones to take down Goliath. He used the boy's little lunch of bread and fish to feed the five thousand. And today, He still uses people like you and me. The question is, will you let Him use you today?

A Prayer for Today

Lord, I put myself in Your hands today. Help me see you at work in the "little things." Help me submit to Your will for my life and give me the strength, joy, and peace as I walk with You. Thank you that you rescued me when I was deep in the river of sin. You pulled me out onto the Rock of Salvation. Now my life is Your life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
