“Fix these words of mine in your hearts . . . tie them as symbols on your hands” Deuteronomy 11:18

The Day Death Died

Today's Verse

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) Then the disciples went back to where they were staying. Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”). Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

The Devotion

The four Gospels each give us a unique view into the most miraculous event in all of history: the raising of Jesus of Nazareth from the dead. Over and over, Jesus predicted His own death, burial, and resurrection. And, over and over, His disciples didn't understand or believe His claims.

John 20 gives us some clues to show that the resurrection really happened and that anybody can receive the resurrection life Jesus gives us. First off, look at the first people who encountered the empty tomb. Mary Magdalene began her journey with Jesus when He cast out seven demons from her. Then, she provided care for the group of disciples following Jesus, watched Jesus die on the cross, and was one of the first to see that Jesus was alive. Like all of us, she had to grow in following Jesus. She went from living a life of darkness to walking in the Light. One proof that the resurrection story isn't "made up" is that Mary Magdalene was the first witness to the empty tomb. In Jesus' day, a woman couldn't even testify in court. Why choose a woman to be the first witness if it was all a lie?

Mary Magdalene didn't keep the news to herself. She ran to the disciples and told them the truth: "I have seen the Lord!" Maybe your past, like Mary Magdalene's, isn't exactly squeaky clean. Maybe you've doubted or misunderstood God. However, when you encounter the risen King, Jesus, He will give you the boldness, opportunities, and words to share the Good News with others. It's news that's so good that you can't keep it to yourself!

A Prayer for Today

Lord, thank you that Jesus is alive and the tomb is empty! Jesus is alive, and life in Him means that I have hope after death. Help me share that same hope you gave to Mary Magdalene with others today. May the joy of the resurrection thrill my soul like it did when I first started following Jesus. In His name, Amen.
