“Fix these words of mine in your hearts . . . tie them as symbols on your hands” Deuteronomy 11:18

It Was Finished Forever

Today's Verse

Then he handed him over to be crucified. Then they took Jesus away. Carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called Place of the Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. There they crucified him and two others with him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle.  Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now finished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, he said, “I’m thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it up to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.

The Devotion

Have you ever been so thirsty that you'd do anything for a drink of cold water? On the cross, Jesus probably had not had any fluids since the Lord's Supper (about 18 hours before). When He said "I thirst," He showed His humanity. This was a direct fulfillment of Psalm 69:21: “for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.”

This wine was not the same as the wine mixed with myrrh that Jesus refused in Mark 15:23 (that was a mild sedative, which Jesus refused to fully taste the cup of God's wrath). Instead, the wine He accepted would have sharpened His senses to make sure He was fully aware of what He was doing. Written 700 years before Jesus, Isaiah 53 tells us what He did for us:

"But he was pierced because of our rebellion,

crushed because of our iniquities;

punishment for our peace was on him,

and we are healed by his wounds.

We all went astray like sheep;

we all have turned to our own way;

and the Lord has punished him

for the iniquity of us all."

The water of life thirsted so that we could never thirst again!

We try so many different things to quench our thirst and longing for satisfaction, but only Jesus can quench our thirst and satisfy our souls!

Then, with His thirst quenched, Jesus uttered the most amazing sentence ever said out loud on planet earth: "It is finished," meaning "It is finished and is forever done"

It was finished…

All our sin paid. All the Father's will fulfilled.

Only a perfect person could give an infinite sacrifice.

Jesus is the Lamb of God slain for us.

Thank God He said "It is finished" and He did not say "I am finished!"

A Prayer for Today

Lord, thank you that You made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. We'll never fully understand the agony that Jesus went through for us, but we thank you for your love and sacrified poured out at Calvary. Thank you that everything is already done for us to be right with You. Help us walk in that freedom and love today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
