Doubling Down on Yahweh
Today's Verse
15The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.16For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.17He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.18And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.19For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,20and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.21Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.22But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation—23if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.Colossians 1:15-23 · NIV
The Devotion
In Exodus 33 and 34, Moses asked God to show him more about who God is and what God does. God could not show His glory to Moses, so God hid Moses in the side of a rock, passed by, and gave Him revelation about who He is: "The Lord (Yahweh), the Lord God (Yahweh El) compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth . . . who forgives iniquity, transgression, and sin, yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished" (34:6-7). God doubled down on His name to make sure Moses knew that it was He, personally, who was revealing and forgiving... and that it was He, Yahweh, who was Holy, Righteous, and the judge of all the earth.
Want to know something wild? Jesus doubled down on the same name in the New Testament. In John 8:58, Jesus said "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” Yahweh in the New Testament is Yeshua, or Jesus! Jesus said in John 10:10: "I and the Father are one." In John 14, Jesus said, He who has seen Me has seen the Father." It doesn't get plainer than that!
Jesus Christ is more than a man: He is God's exact image revealed to us. He is God, who took on flesh and became man so that "through death" He can forgive us and present us holy in God's sight. That's good news for everybody!
Lord, thank you that Jesus Christ is the exact image of God. Thank you that He is before all things, and that in Him, all things hold together. Hold together my life today as I place my spirit into Your hands - the same hands that hid Moses in the side of the rock and the same hands that stretched out on the cross to make a bridge between me, a sinner, and Yahweh, the Holy God. Now, help me live a holy life today by your Holy Spirit in me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
