God Had One Son, and He Made Him a Missionary
Today's Verse
16Meanwhile, the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain Jesus had designated.17When they saw Him, they worshiped Him, but some doubted.18Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,20and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”Matthew 28:16-20 · BSB
The Devotion
David Livingstone was a doctor, missionary, and explorer in Africa. He gave his life to share the gospel in some of the most remote regions on Earth because he believed Jesus's last words were lasting words. He's the one who first said the quote, which is our title today: "God had an only son, and he made him a missionary." All of us, as followers of Jesus, are missionaries. (P.S. David Livingstone was mentioned in a few of the earliest Looney Toons cartoons. Google it!)
Around the breakfast table this morning, my family and I were talking about some themes of the Bible. I had a question that I asked my son, but I was really asking myself. The question is this: "If God went through all that He went through to send His only Son, how do you think God feels when we refuse to go and send and preach the gospel?"
The mission field is around us every day: the people we meet, the people we work for and work with, the customers or classmates. The mission field is also the millions of people who have never heard about Jesus and his first coming. We are closer now to his second coming than ever, but so many have never heard that he came first as a Savior. Let's pray, give, and go, and do all we can to make his name famous among all nations.
Let's be bold and courageous, knowing that He is with us always, even to the end of the age, and that He has all authority wherever we go. He is in control. Let's go make disciples today.
Lord, wherever I go today and whoever I meet, let me live for You. I want to do what You said to do, because You loved me first, because You sent Your Son, Jesus, and because Jesus fully obeyed You, gave His life for my sin, and loved Me, even when I was disobedient and Your enemy. Help me, in the power of Your love, to obey and love and go. There are so many who need to hear the message. Use me however you want, because my life is Yours. In Jesus' name. Amen.
