“Fix these words of mine in your hearts . . . tie them as symbols on your hands” Deuteronomy 11:18

Stopped Dead in Your Tracks

Today's Verse

1First of all, then, I urge that requests, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made in behalf of all people,2for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.3This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,4who wants all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.5For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,6who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time.7For this I was appointed as a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), as a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.8Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger and dispute.

The Devotion

Back in late August, a mom was doing something millions of moms do every day: crossing the sidewalk by a school with her kids. Little did she know, her family's lives were in grave danger. Kae’la Leon Guerrero was walking with her five-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son by their school in Las Vegas when a car came speeding through the school zone straight towards them as if they weren't there at all.

They would have been seriously injured or killed if it wasn’t for one man doing his job: the crossing guard. Guard Richard Jones stepped between the speeding car and Kae’la and her children. Instead of stepping back, he stepped up and got the car to stop just 10 feet from the family. Talk about an everyday hero!

The Bible says there is ONE God and ONE mediator between God and man. A mediator is someone who goes between; someone who steps in and helps a situation out. On our own, we are on a crash course, speeding down the road to destruction. Jesus is fully God and fully man, so He is the only One who can go between us and God. When we get saved, He steps in and stops us in our tracks. We do a 180 degree turnaround with His help (repentance), and start following Him with His help.

Think about it like a huge canyon. On one side is all humanity: you, me, and everyone else who has sinned and offended God. On the other side of the canyon is God, who is perfect, holy, and cannot be in relationship with sin. Jesus, on the cross, made the bridge across the canyon. Because He never sinned yet was a man like us, He could pay the price for our sin. Because He is God, He conquered death, sin, hell, and the grave. That's good news today!

A Prayer for Today

Lord, thank you for being the go-between for me. Thank you for taking my sin and making me holy in God's sight. Thank you for turning my life around and loving me while I was still a sinner. I love You and praise You and live for You today. In Jesus' name. Amen.
