God's Got This!
Today's Verse
24“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.25“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?26Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?27Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?28“And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing,29yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are.30And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?31“So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’32These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.33Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.34“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.Matthew 6:24-34 · NLT
The Devotion
How many times have you and I borrowed trouble from tomorrow? Corie ten Boom, a Nazi concentration camp survivor and committed Christian, once said "Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength."
Throughout the Bible, Jehovah (Yahweh) shows Himself as Jehovah Jireh (meaning "The Lord Our Provider"). Jesus, God who took on flesh, told us that His Father, will provide all of our need when we put His kingdom first.
Of course, this isn't an excuse to make a Christmas list and try to slide it into God's DMs with our selfish desires. When we put God first, we'll be content with what we have, and trust Him for the basic needs of life.
Verse 32 is interesting to me. Jesus says concerns about what to eat, drink, and wear "dominate the thoughts of unbelievers." What dominates our thoughts? If we are truly followers of Jesus, He will renew our mind as we take every thought captive - even the thoughts that stress out about things out of our control. The same God who provided manna for His people in the wilderness, and provided the sacrifice of His son for the sin of the world, will provide all that you and I need to live for Him today. That's good news!
Lord, I come to you with all of my anxieties, worries, and cares today. Help me trade the trouble of worry for trust in You - Jehovah Jireh. Help me put Your Kingdom first and forgive me when I've tried to take matters into my own hands. Thank you for providing everything I need for life and godliness. In Jesus' name. Amen.
