“Fix these words of mine in your hearts . . . tie them as symbols on your hands” Deuteronomy 11:18

Do you want to be healed?

Today's Verse

After these things, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now in Jerusalem by the sheep gate, there is a pool, which is called in Hebrew, “Bethesda”, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, or paralysed, waiting for the moving of the water; for an angel went down at certain times into the pool and stirred up the water. Whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of whatever disease he had. A certain man was there who had been sick for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had been sick for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to be made well?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I’m coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Arise, take up your mat, and walk.” Immediately, the man was made well, and took up his mat and walked.

The Devotion

A couple of months ago, a segment of comedian and podcaster Theo Von's show went viral. The clip's message resonated with people all over the world. In it, Theo, with tears in his eyes, told the world that he has been thinking and meditating on today's passage in John 5.

Theo describes Jesus interaction with the paralyzed man like this: “Jesus asks him, ‘Do you want to be healed?’ Yes. ‘Do you want to be healed?’ That’s a crazy question because, you know, if I get healed, then I’m different. If somebody gets healed, they have a new story.”

Then, Theo got super personal.

He said: “That’s just been something that I’ve been having to ask myself. Do I want to be healed? Do I really want something different? Sometimes a lot of the answer is, ‘No, I don’t want something different … I’m scared. I don’t know what I don’t know … but I think I want a new story.”

The story in John 5 captivates me. Theo's desire for a new story resonates with me. Many times, people want Jesus to fix their situation, but they don't want the salvation Jesus brings. There is no salvation in Jesus without transformation by Jesus. He still saves, heals, and restores - but get ready, because you have to be willing to let Him change every part of your life.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, we pray for Theo today - that he will find salvation, transformation, grace, and love through Jesus. Thank you for saving me. Keep working on me to make me more like You. I allow you access to every part of my life today. Please root out sin and release healing, love, and peace in my mind, body, and spirit, and help me pour out Your love to the people around me today. In Jesus' name. Amen.
